Task 8: Final Proposal

The final proposal shows that I have a clear idea of what I'm going to create.

Working title:

  • From Yesterday by 30 Seconds To Mars

Channel for broadcast:

  • Kerrang!
  • MTV rock

Both channels are equally suited to show a 30 Seconds To Mars video because they show rock songs but also, rock music tends to have meanings and messages behind them. So my music video would be best suited because the meaning that war destroyed lives is conveyed through the music and music video, just like other rock music. Messages and meanings through music are a rock genre convention and my music video conforms to that convention.
Messages and meanings e.g. The Only Exception by Paramore: When you fall in love, don't walk away from it. What I've Done by Linkin Park: Everything we have done throughout the history of man as ruined lives and the world.

Target audience:

It's difficult to get and exact target audience for rock music, because its fan base is so large. However, my target audience would be 17-25 year olds because the music appeals to their energetic lifestyles, but also because the actors used in my music video will be within that age range, so the audience can relate to the situation. The class I would be targeting would be "working class" or E and D grade citizens, simply because most students and individuals from the age 17-25 are either in full time education, or at the start of their carer. Males tend to listen to rock music more then women because women react more emotionally, therefore tend to listen to country music more then rock. On the other hand some would suggest that men and women do not listen to music differently and it's just a perception that society has created.

Genre:

My genre is rock and I'm creating a performance and narrative music video.
It fits into the rock genre, because it contains a meaning that we shouldn't be fighting in a war, that we shouldn't have gone into in the first place. Also, because a lot of rock music videos have a performance within the video. However, my narrative is in a non-linear form which breaks a convention of music videos. Therefore, because it has the conventions of a rock music video, it will be known as a rock music video.

Style:

The music video contains:
  • Archive footage of peace protests and war footage
  • Change of speed: slow motion
  • Zoom in and out
  • Bright white lights
  • Over the Shoulder shots

Task 7: Role Allocation

As I'm working individually, all the roles that would normally be shared, I will be up taking.
Roles such as: director, producer, writer, camera person and editor.

"Auteur"
Auteur is French for author in other words an individual that is solely responsible for creating an individual piece of creative work. In 1954 François Truffaut came up with the Auteur theory because through film, directors can come up with great individual ideas. The Auteur theory means that the director is the true creator of a film and that they take up the roles of casting, producing, directing, writing, editing and being the camera person.
Examples of directors that took up the role of Auteur are:

Sir Alfred Hitchcock and Frank Capra

Bearing this in mind, as I'm working as an individual I will be taking up the role of Auteur.

Bibliography

These websites helped me to define auteur and find famous Auteur's

Task 6: Storyboard

Archive footage for music video

In my chosen music video I'm going to use some archive footage from the Afghanistan war. In 2002 the UK led its own operation (called Operation Herrick), which meant that the UK supported the US (with their operation called Operation Enduring Freedom) and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. The war is still ongoing, so when an individual signs up to the British Army, they have a period of time training before they are shipped off to the war in Afghanistan. So for my music video to look professional, I have to get my facts right.

Also, in one of my shots my persona walks past billboards showing pictures of the tragedies from the war.

Images such as:
Some of the archive footage I may be using are as follows (I will ask for permission to use the footage):

Task 6: Storyboard

How to storyboard your production
  • The purpose of a storyboard is to photograph (draw/digitalise) each and every shot of a film with at list of key information written underneath it.
  • Storyboards allow the director to visualise the whole film before filming and also allows the camera person to understand how the film is to be shot.
  • They also allow you to change elements if they don't work visually before the experience film making process.
Each frame should contain
  • Shot number - can be followed in the intended sequence
  • Framing - is the shot a close up, medium shot or long shot
  • Drawing - a drawing visualisation of what is happening in the shot
  • Action - a brief description of what is happening in the shot
  • Dialogue - single lines may be written
  • Sound effects - should there be any specific sounds, diegetic or non-diegetic.
Each frame on the storyboard must have a shot description.
Also information on movement and position, such as the following abbreviation's could be added
  • H/A - High angle
  • L/A - Low angle
  • POV - Point of view
  • 2 shot - Two people in a shot
  • OTS - Over the shoulder
  • Track/dolly - Move the camera on wheeled platform
  • Crab - Sideways move
  • Pull focus - change what is focused on
