
For the opening of a documentary - First five minuets
- It needs to catch the audience's attention, so the documentary would need to have a strong, interesting topic.
- At the beginning, a central question must be posed, to communicate to that audience what its about. For example "Why is Britain teenage pregnancy capital of Europe"
- Snippets of interviews that provide an incite to the audience about what other individuals think, but only enough to keep the audience wanting more.
- Related music to the topic, it must accompany the opening sequence without over powering the dialogue. For example, a documentary on bulimia might have the song "Beautiful" by "Christina Aguilera" which is all about loving yourself.
- Titles are incredibly important, they need to burst dramatically on the screen.
Actuality
- Film real events as they happen, this allows the audience to connect with the documentary.
- However, it can be difficult especially if the event has already taken place or too dangerous to film. For example, a hurricane or the 9/11 bombings.
Fly On The Wall
- This means filming real people and focusing upon their lives.
- So you filming a live event.
Voice Over
- Most documentary's have a voice over
- The voice over narrates the program, it give out key information on the topic.
Graphics
- The graphics is normally written texts
- It includes: maps drawings and still photographs
- Graphics should appear as a banner at the bottom of the screen when introducing individuals. Showing their names and occupation, so that the audience can see the relevance and importance of the individual.
Interviews
- A documentary includes and expert interview with someone who has ample knowledge of the topic and have a clear incite.
Vox pops
- A vox pop is an interview with a random person, to give the audience an idea about what the general public think.
Talking Head
- Shot of someone talking directly to the camera, who presents the facts. For example, Mike Tyson from the documentary "Tyson: The Movie"
- Also they are usually an authority figure.
Music
- The music is critical for the opening scene, the song and music should not dominate or override the sound or voice over.
- It requires a balance of sounds and images.
