Task 2: Research Into Existing Products

Biographical documentary Analysis

Firstly, even though the title suggests that the audience is watching a film about Mike Tyson, in actual fact it is a biographical documentary about his rise and fall in the boxing career. However, the documentary does contain a few film conventions. These are after the opening credits, it showed and establishing shot, which is a typical film convention. Also, the title "Tyson" is in very a bold masculine font, with fire like colours, this is also typical of action films. Which tell the audience that Mike Tyson is a masculine character, with a fiery, temper prone personality but also that his life was action packed.

The structure is typical of a biographical documentary as it started when he was born, indicating that it went through is rise and fall of his boxing stardom.

Visible editing was used throughout the documentary such as fade in and out for archive footage. Multiple split screen and swiping editing was used when Tyson was talking, to give the impression of insanity. They were also unsynchronised, which supports the audiences view of an unstable mind set. Freeze frames (particularity showing the archive footage of past fights) which is typical of life sport broadcast. Also, the documentary included voice overs and a non-diegetic crowd, which (after the credits) then fades into archive footage of his first major fight.

The credits are extremely different to documentary and film credits, they don't follow any particular convention. They consist of light and dark colours and they don't follow a coherent pattern, this could be interpreted as being like Tyson's mindset. As in that he's not mentally stable.

The instrumental music is from "Rocky Balboa", it was used because it's iconic, powerful and enables the audience to connect with the documentary.
